Disco Aerobics - The latest hot trend in aerobics - a trend-conscious field to begin with - is to mix stuff that usually doesn't belong together. In a one-hour class, an exerciser can try differing activities, sometimes wildly differing. Clubs and instructors concede this stripes-with-plaids approach won't remake the industry. But they hope it will provide a burst of excitement that will attract new people and keep fickle participants from getting bored and moving on.

Pilates - Joseph Pilates (1880-1967) was born in Germany. He left Germany for England in 1912 and studied to become a boxer. He became intrigued by body fitness and developed a method to condition sick patients in a hospital, during World War I. He opened his first facility in New York City, during the 1920s. Pilates, pronounced "pi-LAH-tees", has had a strong following through the years. It has been a chosen method by some of the greatest dancers in the world, but more recently famous Hollywood stars have taken up the practice too. Stars such as Madonna, Courteney Cox, Jennifer Grey, Sharon Stone, and Vanessa Williams have learned the Pilates Method. There are over 150 studios in the United States alone. Pilates proves the theory that good methods to improve body conditioning will always be trendy.

Cardio - Kickboxing - Tae Bo - What is the CardioKickboxing or Tae Bo workout? It is a workout that brings together aerobic techniques and cardiovascular toning. Participants will also learn self-defense tactics. The exercise involves throwing punches, jabs, and uppercuts to help firm your muscles and build conditioning. Oh, there is also plenty of kicking. All of this helps reduce body fat and tone your muscles. You can't mention Tae Bo without mentioning Billy Blanks. Billy won the Massachusetts Golden Gloves Boxing championship in 1984. Shortly thereafter, he began to combine dance music with his Tae Kwon Do moves. This evolved into Tae-Bo and in 1989 he opened the Billy Blanks World Training Center in Sherman Oaks, CA. Tae Bo has become the latest trend in aerobic conditioning and it has spurred growth in other martial arts programs as well.

Spinning - Spinning is an indoor cycling program designed to build cardiovascular conditioning. Participants use a specially designed stationary bike, while working out in a group class setting. The group, music, and raucous energy will remove the boredom from cycling alone. Each individual runs at their own resistance level. Cyclists must also be aware of their breathing and heart rates while training. Spinning was created by Johnn Goldberg, Johnny G., in 1986 while he was training for a cycling race. It eventually was used by cyclists so they could train year-round. It quickly spread to aerobics enthusiasts because it really makes you sweat and burn calories.
