Gentle
aerobic exercise can help cancer patients. Most cancer patients experience a loss of energy and reduced physical performance. In this new report, researchers studied five cancer patients and the effects of a gentle but progressive aerobic walking program. Subjects exercised on a treadmill five days a week at an intensity corresponding to blood lactate of 3 mmol/L, which is below anaerobic threshold. Heart rate was controlled continuously. Initially, training speed was 4.5 kph and training time was five bouts of three minutes with three minutes rest. After one week's training this was increased to four bouts of five minutes, until after five weeks the subjects could walk continuously for 30 minutes. In addition, by the fifth week, walking speed had increased to 5.5 kph. The effects of the program were very positive - all five patients no longer suffered fatigue in daily life, and three of them continued exercising with a jogging program. This study indicates that a well-controlled, gentle and progressive aerobic program can greatly benefit cancer patients. (Dimeo et al (1998). 'Aerobic exercise as therapy for cancer fatigue.'
